Dentures

Do you struggle to eat and speak because you are missing most or all of your teeth? Dentures can replace your missing teeth and allow you to eat and speak properly once more.

Our team of dentists combines technology and experience to help you achieve a beautiful and functional smile with dentures in Hamden, CT.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are prosthodontic devices that are designed to replace missing teeth along one or both dental arches. These natural-looking artificial teeth can restore the function and appearance of your bite, allowing you to eat and speak properly again. Dentures are customized to your needs. You can receive:

Full Dentures

Full dentures are used when you are missing all of your natural teeth along one or both dental arches. They are also referred to as complete dentures.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are used when you are missing several consecutive teeth along a dental arch. Partial dentures fill in the gap to complete your smile for optimal oral function.

Why Choose Dentures?

Improved Function

Missing teeth can make living day-to-day life difficult. Dentures restore your oral function so you can eat the foods you love and speak with confidence.

Improved Oral Health

If you have severe dental damage or decay, extraction may be the best option to restore your oral health and prevent further infection. Dentures then replace the teeth for a functional smile.

Boosted Self-Confidence

Missing teeth can cause you to feel embarrassed and hide your smile. With dentures, you can feel confident sharing your smile with the world.

Traditional Dentures vs. Implant-Supported Dentures

We offer two types of dentures at our Hamden, East Haven, and Branford dental offices: traditional and implant-supported. Both types can be crafted as complete dentures or partial dentures.

Traditional Dentures

Traditional Dentures

Traditional dentures rely on denture adhesive and/or natural suction to remain in place along your gums. They make it easy to enjoy your favorite foods again and share your smile comfortably in any situation.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are secured directly to dental implants. Dental implants are prosthetic tooth roots that are surgically placed in your jaw. Implants provide maximum stability and prevent the jawbone deterioration associated with tooth loss.

Benefits of Implant Dentures

Implants provide a host of amazing dental benefits, making them an excellent investment in your oral health.

Maximum Stability

Once your dentist secures your dentures to your dental implants, there is no need to remove them. You won't need to use messy adhesives, and there are no risks of slipping when you eat or speak. You can be confident your dentures are secured in place.

Bone Health

Even a single missing tooth can cause jawbone deterioration. When the jaw loses the stimulation the tooth roots once provided, it can begin to deteriorate. Dental implants are the only restorative dentistry treatment that can stop and prevent this bone deterioration, which can save you from needing a bone graft later.

Prevent Sagging Facial Muscles

A sunken look due to sagging facial muscles is often the result of bone deterioration that occurs with tooth loss. Because dental implants prevent this bone loss, they can also help maintain the muscles in your mouth and face.

Consultation

During your initial consultation at our Hamden dental practice, your dentist will examine your mouth to determine if dentures are right for you and whether you require full dentures or partial dentures.

If you need preparatory treatment such as extractions or periodontal treatment to treat gum disease, your dentist will plan that before your denture fitting.

Impressions

We'll take impressions of your mouth that will be used to design your dentures. Our digital scanning technology eliminates the need for messy putty impressions and provides a more comfortable experience.

Fitting and Adjustments

Once your dentures are finished, you will have an appointment for a fitting. This allows your dentist to make any necessary adjustments to ensure proper fit and function. We'll take all the time needed to provide the very best result.

Implant-Supported Dentures Process

You will start your smile journey with a consultation and impressions at our dental practice based in Hamden, just like our traditional denture patients do. We will examine you to determine if you are a candidate and if you need any preparatory treatment. The treatment timeline will differ, but thanks to immediate dentures, you won't ever have to go without teeth.

Implant Placement

Your dentist can surgically place your implants during the appointment after your consultation. We offer immediate denture placement, but it is important to note that these are temporary dentures and not your permanent set. Over the next several months, your implants will fuse to the jawbone in a process called osseointegration.

Final Restoration Placement

Once your permanent set of dentures is ready, you will come in for placement. Your dentist will make any adjustments to ensure proper fit, function, and comfort. After securing your dentures to the implants, you can treat your dentures just like natural teeth. They will remain in place except for routine dental exams and cleanings.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dentures in Hamden, CT

Q. Do dentures hurt?

A. No. There may be a slight adjustment period when you first receive your dentures. However, they should not be painful. If you notice gum irritation, sores, or other pain, please contact our Hamden, East Haven, or Branford offices so your dentist can address your concerns and make adjustments to your dentures to ensure proper fit and comfort.

Q. How long does it take to adjust to using dentures?

A. Every patient is different, and some patients will adjust faster than others. We suggest you give yourself about 30 days to get used to your dentures. If you're having trouble with your bite or denture fit, don't hesitate to contact us for an adjustment. It's normal to need an adjustment or two during this initial period. We want you to be completely comfortable with your new smile.

Q. How long do dentures last?

A. With proper care and maintenance, dentures can last for up to 15 years or more. However, porcelain will wear over time, and your dentures will eventually need to be replaced. If you have implant-supported dentures, know that the implants themselves are made of durable titanium, so they can last a lifetime.
