TMJ Treatment

The letters TMJ stand for temporomandibular joint, and the three letters are commonly associated with a disorder of the area.  The pain and dysfunction of the area is also known as TMD, or temporomandibular joint disorder.  The name of the joint comes from where the head and jaw meet: the part of the skull called the upper temporal bone and mandible, or lower jawbone. These bones are separated by cartilage, and there are three ligaments and five muscles involved in the area.  Many people experience problems in this joint.  Those problems may be caused by muscle tension, trauma to the head and/or neck or malformation or misalignment of the teeth.

There are many symptoms for the TMJ disorder which include but are not limited to:

  • Headaches
  • Pain in the ears
  • Soreness or aches when opening and closing the mouth
  • Clicking or popping sounds of the jaw when opening or closing

Our dentists in HamdenEast Haven, and Branford offer treatment for this disorder and works in conjunction with other medical professionals to resolve the problems associated with the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ .
